We have still wood gas enthusiasts in Finland. Not a big crowd of course. Here’s the most famous one. It’s owned by the sitting prime minister of Finland.

This one got better range, but was decidedly less elegant.

Basically, they used town gas, which was pulverized coal and the standard for municipal gas service before natural gas became more commonplace. You could fill your car off a valve in your garage.
